Allium sativum (Garlic) :- Use of garlic in the diet is shown to have beneficial effect on the body, especially the blood and heart system. Garlic has been used for reduction in the hardening of the arteries, high cholesterol and circulation problems. It helps reduce triglyceride and cholesterol levels.
Clinical Information :
Indications :-Cholesterol regulator
Dosage : - One capsules twice a day. Discuss the supplements and medication you take with your health care provider.
Mode Of Action : - It may works by following mechanism : LDL cholesterol oxidation causes atherosclerosis, and garlic specifically inhibits LDL oxidation. And garlic helps protect the arterial lining against oxidation. Garlic prevents abnormal platelet aggregation (thrombosis). The formation of arterial blood clots is the primary cause of most heart attacks and strokes. It inhibits lipid peroxidation, reducing ischemic damage and inhibiting oxidative modification of LDL, thus protecting endothelial cells from the injury by the oxidized molecules, which contributes to atherosclerosis. Hyperlipidemia constitutes a major etiopathological factor for atherosclerosis. The medicinal value of garlic is best known for its lipid lowering effects and antiatherogenic effects. The mechanism by which lipid soluble organosulphur compounds from garlic reduce plasma lipids has not been fully investigated. The hepatic activity of β-hydroxy-β-methylglutaryl-CoA (HMG-CoA) reductase, limiting enzyme in cholesterol biosynthesis and the incorporation of radiolabeled (1, 2 14C ), acetate into hepatic free and esterified cholesterol was significantly decreased. The antiatherogenic effect of the organosulphur compounds may be attributed to the formation of protein internal disulphide and thus inactivation of thiol (-SH) group enzymes such as HMG-CoA reductase and the multienzyme complex of fatty acid synthesis.
